Small complex metal parts can be candidates for investment casting or metal injection molding, but the production routes are fundamentally different. Investment casting fills a refractory mold with molten metal. MIM shapes a powder-and-binder feedstock, removes binder and sinters the component. Comparing them requires more than matching the final outline.
Follow the component through the intermediate stages
The molded MIM shape must survive subsequent binder removal and sintering. Investment casting instead relies on pattern production, mold preparation and metal solidification. Each route therefore has different geometry and process-control considerations.
MPIF’s industry association describes the powder, binder and processing sequence in its MIM process overview. The practical consequence for a buyer is to evaluate the complete route rather than assume that both processes achieve detail in the same way.
Part scale and geometry influence the economics
MIM is commonly evaluated for small, intricate components, while an investment proposal may suit a different range of sizes and alloy requirements. Actual feasibility should come from the supplier’s review of the drawing, not from a universal maximum dimension in a general article.
Consider the surfaces requiring machining and the features that must be delivered near net shape. A small part with inaccessible details presents a different comparison from one whose dimensions can be established economically by straightforward cutting.
Qualification must represent the proposed material route
An alloy designation alone does not establish equivalent performance between a sintered component and a casting. Material condition, internal quality and the relevant mechanical requirements need to be evaluated under the applicable specification.
For aerospace-related programmes, approval requirements come from the customer and governing engineering documents. Educational discussion of a route does not establish that a supplier or component is qualified for that application.
Compare the cost of acceptable production
Tooling, expected release quantities, finishing and examination should be included in both proposals. Ask how sample approval will demonstrate the features and properties that matter and how later changes will be controlled.
